Excavation and trenching operations are among the most hazardous operations in construction. Not only do trench collapse and cave in consistently rate in the frequently cited violation but also among the most deadly.
Working in and around excavations is addressed in OSHA regulations 29 CFR 1926. Subpart P of the same section covers the specific requirements for excavations. Workers training is an integral part of compliance but more importantly training is a vital first step in keeping workers safe.
